About Me, Samantha Garry - Blog #1

     Hi! My name is Samantha Garry, and I am a second-year student at RIC. My major is Art Education, and I have not decided on a concentration in art yet. I plan on teaching middle school students because they are so interesting and eager to learn and create compared to other grades I have observed. Being employed as a TA at an art studio for over a year has provided me the skills I will need in my future art teaching and has helped me understand what being in a classroom is like. Empathy and reliability are necessary to create extraordinary classroom connections and provide students a safe space. When students feel comfortable in a classroom, they will work better and be better.    

    Students are so vulnerable; seeing the different backgrounds that students come from is one of the most enticing things that come from the want to teach. Taking care of and listening to students, hearing them, understanding them, and being able to relate to students are so important.

Blog #2 - The Silenced Dialogue - Lisa Delpit

     While reading The Silenced Dialogue  by Lisa Delpit, I went into the article with an open mind. During class, my professor warned us that this story was challenging to read, and some classmates stated that this reading was not pleasant. In my experience reading The Silenced Dialogue , it was not hard to read. I can understand what Delpit is talking about and what the people she spoke to and talked about meant clearly. Delpit mostly talks about how white teachers are not considerate listeners. They just hear when a teacher of color, for example, talks about their teaching methods or styles of teaching. The article inputs an answer from a black woman in an urban elementary school who discusses that when she (or you) tries talking to white people, they want everything to be their way. Blog #1 - SCWAAMP & Power, Privilege, and Difference

 S.C.W.A.A.M.P. is a set of different questions in society that we ask ourselves sometimes. Some questions include, "How is straightness valued in our society?" Another question is, "How is whiteness valued in our society?" These questions can be answered in many different ways, depending on how different people view different things. A white person in America may not think that they are valued if they have an altered set of beliefs about themselves and where they grew up, while on the other hand, an African-American person may/will think that white people are fundamentally valued exponentially more than any other race living in America.  In the reading by John Alan, he talks about his relationships with other races and how he can't understand the lives of other races and sexes since he is a white man from a middle-class life. Blog #3 - The Four I's of Oppression with Luna Malbroux

       The Four I's of Oppression consists of ideological, interpersonal, institutional, and internalized.      In this video, Luna Malbroux discusses how, even when we were in the womb, ideas about gender and race shaped how we show up in the world.       When Malboux begins to discuss ideological oppression, she asks us to remember all the things we have heard when we were children that make a "real girl" and what makes "a real boy." It's always been shown in shows, the toy aisle, and quotes in school from adults. Toy sections for boys have toolboxes and science kits, while the girls section has pretend makeup kits. These differences can lead to the idea of a group being more deserving or smart than the other group, in this case, men being smarter than women. It is normalized.
